Diet is a four-letter word

After spending a fun filled day boating on the lake or shopping around our quaint uptown, your stomach’s going to be hungry for some food. And we’re not talking about ordered-through-a-speaker-and picked-up-in-a-bag cuisine. Oh, no! We’re talking fine Southern fare made from recipes passed down from generations. We’re talking fresh vegetables direct from the local farmer’s field. Meats seasoned, grilled and served in a way that treats a diet like the four-letter word it is.

But before you select an entrée, you have to pick a location. And, in Person County, our restaurants and chefs are as interesting and colorful as our menu selections. Want to dine in a haunted train car? Want to sample beer crafted by Rocket Scientists? How about eating a meal prepared by the Executive Chef of three North Carolina Governors? If any or all of these sound interesting, then pack up the car and your appetite and head over our way. Because, as we like to say, “Dining is better in Person.”

Here’s a quick local guide to help you make your decision. Don’t worry if you can’t pick just one restaurant. You can always come back for seconds.

The Homestead Steakhouse
205 Frank Timberlake Rd
Timberlake, NC 27583

This 40,000 square foot restaurant can seat you and 899 of your closest friends. Housed in a big red barn, the Homestead, much like its food, is anything but understated. The menu is packed with any kind of food you can imagine. Shrimp, salmon, ribeye, filets, smothered chicken and sides that will make you reconsider your position on sharing. Sunday buffet is a must!

Old Country Club Steak House
555 Community House Rd
Roxboro, NC 27574

The Old Country Club Steak House has been part of the fabric of Person County since 1970. Order steak or fish. Have a cocktail or sweet tea. Take a date or your grandmother. Celebrate a divorce or wedding. The Old Country Club Steak House is the perfect location for any special event or just a random Wednesday when you are hungry for a great charcoal-kissed steak. Oh, there is also a massive salad bar for those looking to eat lettuce and envy the people who ordered a steak.

Clarksville Station

4080 Durham Road
Roxboro, NC 27573

How about a fantastic meal in an old train car with a side of ghost? That’s what you can get at Clarksville Station. Built at the turn of the century, this classic Victorian Depot offers a themed menu inspired by the glory days of the American railroad. Enjoy a Casey Jones or take a bite out of a delicious Hobo. The train cars that now serve as dining rooms were originally used in the Civil War as a hospital. On several occasions diners have reported seeing an old conductor in the mirror behind their table while they were eating. Boo-appetite!

Black Creek Brewery

111 Depot St,
Roxboro, NC 27573

There’s a saying, “Beer; because no good story ever started over a glass of water.” And, with that in mind, Black Creek Brewery was created. A local Roxboro favorite, it’s owned by brothers Dan (a former Rocket Scientist) and Mike (a Professional Engineer). These two created the delicious craft beers we know and love, such as Sunny Day IPA, Fish Tail Ale, Copperhead Red and Blue Heron Wit. Located in the heart of Uptown Roxboro, Black Creek Brewery is an easy walk to area shops and restaurants.

1792 Beer Company

106 North Main Street
Roxboro, North Carolina 27573

The 1792 Beer Company is not named, as some think, for the amount of beers you can buy in one location. It is named after the year Person County was founded. And this relatively new addition to Uptown Roxboro offers a space that welcomes everybody. Owned by buddies, Kyle and Zack, the bottle shop sells domestic beers, wines and hard ciders almost exclusively. Come in. Hang out. Play a game of corn hole with your friends or join in a local crafting class. Because nothing says fun like alcohol and large knitting needles.

Brookland Eats

333 Old Durham Road,
Roxboro, NC 27573

Brookland Eats is a must-stop for any foodie that happens to visit Person County. It is owned and operated by David Gaydeski who served as Executive Chef to three North Carolina Governors. The menu here will not disappoint. Try local favorites like a Pimento Cheese BLFGT (Bacon, lettuce and fried green tomatoes) or a bacon-wrapped pork loin over rice pilaf with apple chutney. The food is inspired. The portions are ample. And the things this man can do with a sweet potato will make you say “Amen.”
