There are a lot of reasons to love summer, but one of the top perks of the season are fresh garden vegetables! Don’t have your own garden? No worries – there is a small local farm or a Farmer’s Market near you with all the locally grown produce you can handle. Tomatoes, squash, sweet corn, peas or beans- It doesn’t get much better than sun ripened and freshly picked veggies grown right in your own community. Person County has an abundance of small local farms that offer a variety of goods, from vegetables, fruit, breads and baked goods, herbs, flowers, jams and jellies, eggs, meat, and more. During the season, you can be sure to find a representation of local farmers and growers at the Person County Farmer’s Market, 601 N Madison Blvd., open on the first Saturday of each month from 9:00 am -12:00. The Roxboro Farmer’s Market, Depot St. is open daily throughout the season (except Sundays) from 7 am – noon, located in parking lot behind Long Memorial United Methodist Church, just off Depot Street in Uptown Roxboro. Person County also has independent markets that offer seasonal produce items, including Countryside Produce Market, 6101 Burlington Rd. Roxboro, open Weekdays 10 am – 7 pm, Saturday and Sunday 9 am – 6 pm, and Carver Farm Nursery, 105 Carver Farm Rd, Roxboro open 8 am – 5 pm weekdays and 8 am – 3 pm on Saturday, closed Sunday. Another option for sourcing locally grown produce are Community Supported Agriculture programs. These programs operate as a "subscription", where the customer pays a monthly fee (or however the farm structures their payment options) and receives a curated box of products on the farm’s schedule. These boxes can include vegetables, dairy, meat, and more. An example of a CSA in the area is Honey Bee Hills Farm, in Prospect Hill, NC. Their CSA subscription is year-round, and boxes include produce, salad, and/or flowers. They also sell produce at local markets and they offer on line ordering options as well.
