Person County Historical Society

The Person County Historical Society was founded in July, 1959, by a group of Person County citizens who saw a need to document and preserve the history of Person County. Over the years, the Historical Society has been active in erecting Historical Markers along the highways, collecting old photographs of people and places in the county, and compiling articles and writings about Person County. After becoming a tax-exempt corporation in 1972, the Historical Society accepted ownership of a number of cemeteries in the county. The Historical Society was instrumental in the preservation of McGhee’s Mill when it was threatened with destruction by the construction of Hyco Lake.

Perhaps the most labor-intensive project undertaken by the Historical Society was the compilation of a three-volume publication, The Heritage of Person County. These books document the history of the county and contain numerous articles and photographs of people, places and events in the county’s history. They have at their core a wealth of family histories written by family members which trace the history of each family and the connections with others.
